| COMPETITION FOR A WORK OF ART AT THE MUNICIPAL THEATER OF NICOSIA |
The art installation, named “The circle of arts”, is dedicated to the creative process of producing an artwork and was designed and submitted to a competition in 2021 for the selection of the most suitable artwork for installation at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, based on the Law which provides for the minimum percentage of adornment with works of art of public buildings (Law 57(I)/2009).
The project was a joint effort between our office Constantinidou Architecture and the artist Elli Embedokli and reflects the path that follows a project, visual, theatrical or musical, which has its own course, its own cycle of creation and implementation.
Drawing inspiration from this creative process, the circle in question was created to represent the journey towards a final goal: the alterations that inevitably come about, the hidden energy of a curved line, as well as any pauses in development that always prove to be fruitful. Τhe installation piece has a dual role, as it is not only a sculpture for the visitors to observe, but also to use and interact with.
At the same time, through the use of fragmented ceramics, the installation also depicts the artistic process of collecting different inspirations, experiences and influences. The fragments are joined next to each other, creating an alloy, a new puzzle whose pieces may not individually fit, but together they create a harmonious whole just like the stimuli in a work of art or the pieces that make up a performance.
The use of ceramics, a material widely known in Cyprus since prehistory, is not accidental, as it refers to the history of the island but with a fresh and lighter look. Together with the choice of colours that allude to the sun, an element that is also characteristic of the island, they create a set of history, references and movement that both distinguishes and complements the listed building without imposing itself on the space.
