| ONE-STOREY HOUSE |
The house is intended for a middle-aged couple, who decided to leave behind the intense daily life of the city and spend more time in the natural landscape. The plot is located in Agios Epiphanios, a mountainous community in the district of Nicosia, characterised by intense vegetation. The design process aims at the harmonious coexistence of the building with the local natural environment.
The plot has an irregular shape with an elevated road creating a slope on one side and a stream forming a cliff on the other side. Due to the sloping ground and the prominent position of the plot, the spaces were organised to offer an impressive view towards the village on the west side.
The building forms two ground floor volumes with sloping roofs and fits harmoniously into the environment. These two shapes separate the living areas from the sleeping areas. The intermediate glass space houses the entrance, as a vestibule of the two spatial units. The interior and exterior spaces form an uninterrupted unit, while the large transparent openings remove the boundaries between interior and exterior.
Adequate ventilation of the premises is achieved by openings that create air currents from the windward to the leeward side of the building, whilst protecting it from the north. the openings, of different sizes, are carefully placed to offer escapes towards the landscape.
Special emphasis was given to the construction of the house due to the steep slopes, and the proximity to the stream. the house, as a platform, is lifted above the ground with metal piles. The courtyard functions as a "plateau" with views of the surrounding areas with the outdoor seating area being shaped as a natural extension of the indoor living areas.
Calm tones were chosen that give a sense of coolness to the building as such colours have the ability to relax, creating a home away from stress and fatigue. They were used to support the basic needs of the couple which was to leave behind of the intense rhythms of the city in order to evoke a feeling of peace and freedom.
