| COMPETITION FOR THE SELECTION OF THE MOST SUITABLE ART PROJECT FOR INSTALLATION IN THE NEW BUILDING OF THE CYPRUS THEATRE ORGANISATION |
Within the framework of the minimum mandatory rate of enrichment of public buildings with works of art law of 2009, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) had announced a competition for the selection of the most suitable work of art for placement in the new building of the THOC.
Our office, interested in culture and the arts, submitted, together with the artist Elli Embedokli, the piece entitled "Thaleia" which is an inspiration and a reference to the muse of the theatre.
The work is a sculpture, the upper part of which is presented as a lifeless, "unwritten" form, which is only to "come to life" on stage. The lower part of the figure's torso is clothed in a high–waisted, perforated dress that suggests a theatrical costume. The lacy metallic dress emits and diffuses artificial light from within as it rotates, breaking the stillness and creating a visual spectacle in the surrounding space.
The human figure is "activated" to convey the movement and energy of the theatre. At the same time, the work takes advantage of the natural light, since during the midday hours a play of light and shadow is to be created, thus extending the space occupied by the sculpture. Moreover, the opening at the bottom of the skirt evokes the curtains of a theatre stage, further reinforcing the identity of the work and its connection to the theatre.
The choice of materials is entirely conscious. Copper is a metal directly almost identical to the history of Cyprus, since it is directly linked to the mineral wealth of the island. At the same time, copper and concrete are a characteristic feature of the new building of THOC. In addition, it is worth noting that the copper, like the concrete, is to be left untreated, in its natural colours, without the addition of colour coatings as an indirect reference to the existence of the theatre from antiquity to the present day.
